Hospital CAHPS Definition: Consumer Assessment of Health Care Providers and Systems (HCAHPS)

Hospital CAHPS surveys are recommended for hospitals and supervised by the Department of Health and Human Services. IPPS (non-CAH) hospitals are required to participate or they will have their annual payment update reduced by 2%. CAH are not currently required to participate but may choose to either perform "dry runs" without public reporting or voluntarily participate and publish the suvery results.

This survey is a standardized survey of patien's perspectives of hospital care. HCAHPS Survey has 27 questions about the patients recent hospital stay. Our surveys are implemented by mail mode.

Home Care CAHPS Definition: Consumer Assessment of Health Care Providers and Systems (HHCAHPS)

HHCAHPS surveys are proposed by CMS for Home Health Care agencies and departments of hospitals to begin in Januarly 2010 with public reporting starting in January 2011. It is also proposed that participation in 2010 is necessary to avoid a 2% reduction in Medicare market basket update.

HHCAHPS Survey has 34 items about their Home Health Care, which include questions about access to care and communication and interaction with agency staff. Demographic items (health status, education, whether patient lives alone). Supplemental items can be added. The HHCAPS survey is implemented by mail mode.
